On the Use of Large, Passive Data Sets (“big data”) in Transportation Planning

November 8, 2019 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Urban planning generally, and transportation planning specifically, continues to anxiously await the disruption of our industry by the arrival of useful data products generated by sensors in mobile devices that are passively collecting data. It may be time to ask whether or not the big data revolution has in fact arrived and whether the data products currently on the market are likely to remain on the market without meaningful improvements. In order to frame the discussion, this session will provide an overview of how and by whom passive transportation data sources are collected, as well as approaches data originators use to protect customer privacy. Trends are then examined to understand whether or not further advances and actual true disruptions to urban transportation planning and modeling lie ahead. This talk is organized by the the UVM Transportation Research Center and is open to the public.
